Spaceboy_with_golden_button

I've had the pattern book for the wee wonderful Spaceboy and Robot for so, so long, I'd almost forgotten I owned it. Then while I was catching up with bloglines this morning I saw Oh Fransson had been busy making a Spacegirl (very lovely she is too!) and a couple of robots.

So I dug out the pattern and Annie and I made a Spaceboy together. David was a little sceptical about the extent of Annie's involvement but she traced all of the pattern pieces, sewed the straight seams, turned everything the right way out and had a good stab at the stuffing. As always, she got to make all of the creative decisions* while I sewed the 'tricky' bits.

There weren't actually many tricky bits, the whole thing is incredibly easy to put together, and an absolute dream to follow. I can see why weewonderfuls has such a loyal fan base. I think this pattern works so well because it's simple, with just enough twiddly bits to give it character, and enough room to make each toy individual.
Check out the incredible variations here.

(*Does anyone else find it difficult to go with their children's creative decisions?! I really wanted the yellow button in the top photo but Annie insisted on the mother of pearl because it "looks like the moon!". And I begrudgingly went with the retro space fabric even though I thought the print was too big and too 'obvious'! I really have to learn to be less controlling and go with her intuition.)

I think Annie did a great job choosing the big groovy button. Spaceboy looks really wonderful, love the fabrics!

Your space boy is fab - and i definitely have problems accepting the children's crafty decisions but often they are right!!!!

He's adorable! Your little acorn hasn't fallen far from the tree -- she did a great job picking fabrics and button!

He's ace! I thought he was tiny until I saw the picture of Annie holding him and was quite surprised by his size (so to speak). I have that fabric and was making some bunting for a friend's boy's room to cheer up their "new" decrepid old house purchase so I might make him one of those to go with it!

Very cute. I have this one too but haven't made it yet. I hadn't even thought about doing Space Girl. On the kid thing, I stopped asking long ago or I give them two options and let them choose so it seems like they're picking. That sounds terrible as I write it but it works well ;)

very cute!!

And I know what you mean about letting children choose. We had to get new lampshades for their bedroom yesterday and No 1 went for this incredibly tacky plasticky football thing...

Oh dear. But he's soooo pleased with it I just didn't have the heart to disappoint him.

Sigh.

OMG!!!!!!!!!He is totally gorgeous!!!!!what a great job.I love him!!!xoxo

I just found your blog. Your daughter's choices are great! In fact as I looked at Space Girl I was thinking what great choices you had made and wondered why I can't put things together as well. Gotta trust their creative decisions.
